This month's featured WIP presentation is with The Made Shop: a family owned design company located in Denver and Los Angeles that makes spaces, objects, films, and graphic designs of all kinds for all kinds of people. They have a special expertise in making things that they don’t know how to make (yet).
Lest the social media age numbs us to glimpses into others’ lives, humans have always had a healthy interest in each other. Before we made careers of sharing the best moments of ourselves, it was basic curiosity that led to eavesdropping, peeking through fences, and making up stories for those we saw but didn’t know.
Dignity is the heartbeat of the city. Here everyone learns, in their own way, how to swim Valparaiso’s waves. The energy is synonymous with movement, and here, something is always happening.
The outdoor community is one of the most vibrant and adventurous groups of people you’ll ever stumble into. And once you’re in, you’re inspired to make your mark within it. Some people go the professional route, building a life on a sport that pulls blood, sweat, and tears out of them. Others go the creative route, photographing, drawing, or creating beautiful and useful gear. But there’s another route, the one followed by those who create something that seems almost obvious but groundbreaking.
If I'm stuck on ideas in a painting I'll usually sit the work in progress somewhere in my room where I know I'll look at it when I open my eyes. I sit up in the middle of the night and watch what my mind creates in its lucid state. Then I wake up and try to paint it. I can close my eyes right now and make myself go into a lucid dream within five minutes and create whatever situation I want.
Like many of you, we experienced loss, pain, and endured intense situations personally and professionally. We were stretched beyond what we thought we were capable of, yet the new year has us feeling full of fresh perspective and renewed energy to forge ahead!
The spirit of Old Salem carries a sense of serenity and quietude, reminiscent of a simpler time when life was unhurried, one had time to chat with the neighbors, and everyone in a community played a vital role, from the humble candlemaker and baker to the doctor or gunsmith.
